Come share with us the natural beauty of Dauphin Island, "Alabama's Sunset Capital." Miles of white sand beaches are among the best on the gulf coast. The Island is truly a great place for your family vacation, or a secluded romantic getaway.

Dauphin Island is off the beaten path, located 3 1/2 miles off Alabama's Gulf Coast, 35 miles south of historic Mobile. The beaches are never crowded, even during the peak summer season. Enjoy the Gulf Coast's best fishing, unlimited watersports, beachcombing, world-famous birdwatching, our "laid-back" atmosphere and the Gulf Coast's freshest seafood.

Dauphin Island, named for Louis XIV's great-grandson and heir, the Dauphin, is a wonder of nature and full of history - a beautiful barrier island on the Gulf of Mexico. The population is about 1,300. The town is included in the greater Mobile metropolitan statistical area.

Dauphin Island is home to great beaches, historic Fort Gaines, the Dauphin Island Sea Lab, The Estuarium public marine aquarium, the Dauphin Island Airport, boat ramps, a fishing pier located on the Island's eastern end, Native American prehistoric sites, and several gift shops and restaurants. Beaches attract tourism, and fishing is a popular activity in the waters around the island. The island is connected to the mainland by a 3.5 mile long bridge.

The Island is 15 miles long. The eastern, wider portion of the island, is shaded by thick stands of maritime pines and live oaks, and the narrow, western part of the island features sand dunes, sea oats and beautiful beaches. Proclaimed one of the top five birding sites in all of North America, the entire island is a bird sanctuary, the largest is the 164-acre Audubon Bird Sanctuary. Dauphin Island is the first landfall encountered by many birds as they migrate north in early spring from Central and South America. As a consequence many species can be found resting there before continuing their journey. Over 340 species of birds have been recorded on the Island
